GEORGE TOWN: At least 100 motorcyclists were forced to push their machines for about 10km after being rounded up during an operation to curb illegal racing.
They were made to walk from Shamrock Beach in Batu Feringghi to the Tanjong Tokong police station during the five-hour Ops Samseng Jalanan which started at midnight yesterday.
Some of them had tried to escape but were caught by policemen deployed at nearby locations.
State Police Public Order and Traffic head Supt Che Wan Aziz Che Wan Hussin said summonses were issued to 26 motorcyclists for 29 types of offences including riding without licences, expired road tax and illegal modification of their machines.
“We seized four motorcycles as their riders did not have licences.
“An 18-year-old boy was also arrested after he tested positive for syabu.
“We monitored the situation for about a week before carrying out the operation.
“More such operations will be held on a weekly basis, especially on weekends and the eve of public holidays,” he said at the scene.
A Tanjung Bungah resident, who declined to be named, said he was glad that the police were taking action as the illegal racers had been causing his family and neighbours sleepless nights.
“They would sometimes race in the wee hours of the morning.
“The noise is unbearable.
