KUALA LUMPUR: One hundred and fifteen motorcycles and four cars were seized during an operation against illegal racing at Dataran Merdeka here yesterday.

Police also rounded up about 500 Mat Rempit and illegal racers in the 2am operation.

Road Transport Department (JPJ) enforcement director Salim Parlan said the seized vehicles did not have valid road tax discs or had been illegally modified, while some of the drivers did not have a valid licence.

The operation involved 208 personnel members, including those from the police, the JPJ and the Kuala Lumpur City Hall.

Salim said police and other enforcement agencies had blocked all exits and that officers were deployed at the scene in disguise hours before the crackdown.

“Police will take action against the illegal racers,” he said, adding that the JPJ would take action on technical aspects, including vehicle modification.

The owners will get their vehicles returned at the JPJ office in Wangsa Maju in 48 hours, after a comprehensive inspection, he said.

Thirty other cars were issued with notices for them to be re-modified according to original specifications within 10 days, Salim reporters at the end of the four-hour operation.

Meanwhile, Bukit Aman traffic chief Datuk Abdul Aziz Yusof said a number of underage youths were among those caught and summonses would be issued to their parents or the owners of vehicles they had used.

“Most of these Mat Rempit also modified their motorcycle exhausts for the purpose of racing,” he said, adding that similar operations were conducted simultaneously in Perak and Selangor.

MCPF hails move to seize m-bikes

Postby admin » Mon May 04, 2009 6:25 am

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) has welcomed the proposal by the Royal Malaysian Police to curb the “Mat Rempit” menace by seizing their motorcycles.

Its vice-chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said under current law an illegal racer would only face action for dangerous driving.

“The MCPF welcomes the proposal to introduce a special section for illegal motorcycle racers, which includes seizure of their motorcycles,” he said in a statement here today.

Lee suggested that youths caught taking part in illegal motorcycle racing to also be sentenced to perform up to 100 hours of community service. — Bernama
