MIRI: Work to upgrade the Beluru-Lapok road, which was mentioned by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak recently, officially commenced yesterday and is expected to be completed by Sept 5, 2013.

PPES Works (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd was awarded the RM101.3 million contract to upgrade the 35.7km stretch, which linked Baram district with the city here, as well as the proposed site of the Baram hydroelectric project.

Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Jacob Dungau Sagan, who is also the Baram member of parliament, witnessed the handing-over ceremony of the contract between Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (Score) project officer Woon Tai Kwan and PPES Works' head of business development Karim Reduan.

The Beluru-Lapok road is one of the RM500 million four-package road project in the state.

The other three packages involved roads up to the Logan Bunut National Park Centre, Long Lama and a 60km access road to the hydroelectric dam site -- all to be completed within three years.

At present, the roads were made of gravel and earth, and the project packages would upgrade it to a paved surface.

In his visit to Long Banga, a remote settlement in interior Baram on July 22, Najib said that he would ensure that the road project be implemented in the near future.

Sagan expressed appreciation to the prime minister's commitment in enabling the project to take off.

He said the road had become the core of criticism in his constituency and had always been used as an issue in elections.
