KOTA BARU: Police detained 80 suspected motorcycle gang members or mat rempit in an eight-hour traffic operation in the inner city during this Ops Sikap.
All their machines were seized and a total of 200 summonses were issued to the bikers aged between 17 and 24.
The young riders, who took to the inner city roads to avoid detection during the Ops Sikap, were detained along Lundang and Wakaf Che Yeh from 10pm to 6am on Sunday.
Kota Baru OCPD ACP Zahrudin Abdullah, who confirmed the detention, said police have recorded a higher number of “mat rempit” activities during Ramadan, especially when most people were performing prayers after breaking fast.
“Areas where police would also monitor for illegal racing are Padang Tembak, Jalan Kubang Kerian, Balai Islam, Melor and Pasir Hor,” he said.
ACP Zahrudin also reminded parents that they would be summoned to police stations if their children were suspected of riding their motorcycles without valid driving licences.
He urged all road users in Kelantan to be patient as the roads would become congested during the coming Hari Raya Aidilfitri break.
