A case of so near yet so far

Residents of two villages in Bukit Mertajam are appealing for an overhead bridge for pedestrians and motorcyclists to be built over the railway line which runs between their villages.

About 200 residents from Kampung Permatang Rawa and Kampung Padang Lalang staged a 30-minute peaceful demonstration beside the railway track last Friday to voice out their appeal.

They said the short cut that they had been using to cross the railway track between the two villages would be fenced up once the on-going double tracking project was completed.

Padang Lalang mosque imam Salehuddin Saad, 33, said they would then have to travel about 2km via Bukit Mertajam town to get to each other’s village instead of about 500m now via the short cut.

He urged the authorities concerned to view the matter seriously for the benefit of the residents of both villages.

“We have written to various parties concerned but there have been no reply from them so far,” he said.

Salehuddin said 90% of Kampung Permatang Rawa residents would go to the Padang Lalang mosque for Friday prayers using the short cut as there was no mosque in their village.

He said children from both villages also travel between their villages to study in SMK Permatang Rawa in Kampung Permatang Rawa and SR Sungai Rambai and SM Agama Ahmadiah in Kampung Padang Lalang.

Villager Ahmad Rani Samad, 43, said an overhead bridge would save them travelling time to go the mosque.

“We can even walk to the mosque if there is an overhead bridge,” he added.
