The construction of flyovers for the electrified double-track project, which involves several roads in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, has resulted in traffic coming to a crawl.
The situation has become worse during peak hours — motorists who usually take about 10 minutes to reach their destination have to spend about 40 minutes on the road now.
Berapit Implementation and Coordination Unit (ICU) officer and state MCA secretary Lau Chiek Tuan said those affected the most were office workers and schoolgoing children who arrive at their offices and schools late because of the congestion.
“The problem has become an everyday affair and is getting worse, especially to the residents of Bukit Mertajam.
“We must find a way to resolve it,” he said during a press con-ference at Padang Lalang ICU offi-cer Tan Teik Chee’s service cen- tre in Taman Sungai Rambai recently.
The flyovers are being built over Jalan Arumugam Pillai, Jalan Padang Lalang, Jalan Maju, Jalan Rozhan, Kampung Permatang Tok Elong and Jalan Berapit.
Lau said that Jalan Song Bak Kheng-Jalan Kota Permai, Jalan Bukit Minyak-Jalan Kota Permai, Jalan Alma-Jalan Rozhan and Jalan Rozhan-Jalan Permatang Tinggi had been badly affected.
“I hope the police can mo- nitor and control the traffic si- tuation in the affected areas,” he said.
Lau added that he and Tan planned to meet central Seberang Prai district police chief ACP Azman Abd Lah to highlight the matter.
He said the Seberang Prai Municipal Council could also help ease the problem by monitoring the traffic lights.
