Apathetic motorists cause traffic congestion

The traffic congestion in Desa Sri Hartamas has been a long-standing problem and the indifferent attitude of Malaysian motorists is not helping matters.

According to long-time Sri Hartamas resident Vincent Chong, cars will either be double-parked or illegally parked along the yellow line.

“The situation is bad in the mornings and evenings and it causes a traffic congestion. It is also bad during lunch hours,” said Chong.

Motorists tend to park their cars nearer to the shops that they are going to, even if it means obstructing the smooth flow of traffic.

A check by StarMetro during lunch hour on a weekday found cars illegally parked along yellow lines in front of shops even though there were still many bays available at the Jalan 19/70A open-air parking.

Similarly, the public parking lots at the back of the commercial area, along Jalan Sri Hartamas 22, were quite empty.

“Most of the parking bays in front of the shops are taken up by people who work there so customers who want to go to the bank or have a quick meal are often left with the bays that are far away,” he said.

Chong said residents were also upset that an open space previously used as a parking lot had been cordoned off and used as a depot to store towed cars by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

“The depot is empty and it is a waste of space. DBKL should build a multi-storey carpark there,” said Chong who collected about 20 signatures from residents and shopowners who supported the suggestion last year and forwarded the request to DBKL.

In an e-mail reply to Chong and the residents, DBKL said the lot was not suitable for a multi-storey car park.

When contacted, a DBKL spokesperson said the depot was there to temporarily store cars that had been towed from areas like Hartamas, Bangsar and Segambut.
