KUALA LUMPUR: Peugeot is working on a new Asean Car, to be made in Malaysia for the domestic market and also for regional export. The car is scheduled for launch in 2012.
Reliable sources close to the business said research work has already begun.
A top management team from Naza will be going to France next month to work out the details, said the sources.
It is believed that the Asean Car could either be a subcompact or compact car though discussions on the type to be introduced are still at the preliminary stage.
Peugeot’s local partner remains silent on the Asean Car. When contacted, the office of Nasim Sdn Bhd CEO SM Nasarudin SM Nasimuddin declined to comment.
An Asean car is a model developed mainly for Asean member nations. Examples include Toyota Vios and Honda City.
They are generally not sold in Europe or North America but the Toyota Yaris Sedan (Vios) is an exception.
In January, Peugeot deputy managing director Nicolas Wertans announced that it would make Malaysia the regional production hub for right-hand drive models.
Europe’s second-largest carmaker chose Malaysia because it has the largest passenger car market in the region, and it is also the country with the strongest Peugeot sales within Asean.
Nasim is due to make a new B-Segment Peugeot sedan codenamed “T33” for Malaysia and the region.
This model is set for launch in October. A T73 C-Segment sedan is slated for production in 2011.
