Authorities to crack down on illegal traders who ignore warnings
The Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) will take enforcement action against the estimated 2,500 illegal hawkers on the mainland, municipal councillor Soon Lip Chee said.
He said the council would not hesitate to impose the maximum RM500 compound on them for refusing to apply for licences despite being warned repeatedly.
“We normally impose the minimum RM150 compound on illegal hawkers.
“But many of them are stubborn and they continue to trade illegally.
“Those trading by the roadside cause traffic congestion since motorists park haphazardly along the road to patronise their stalls,” he said in an interview yesterday.
Soon said the parking bays at the Sri Uda market off Jalan Raja Uda were often occupied by illegal hawkers, thus preventing motorists from parking their vehicles there.
At present, he said, there were 46 vacant trading lots for food and drinks at council-owned hawker centres in north Seberang Prai, 16 lots in central Seberang Prai and one lot in south Seberang Prai.
He said there were also vacant trading lots to sell meat and groceries in 12 markets on the mainland — Kepala Batas market (15 lots), Sri Uda (six), Jeti Lama (six), Sri Bandar (40), Taman Bagan (42), Valdor (four), Sungai Bakap (25), Bukit Mertajam (25), Chai Leng Park (six), Taman Sri Rambai (one), Seberang Jaya (nine) and Sri Delima (10).
