JAKARTA: The ban on sale of subsidised RON95 fuel to Malaysian owners of foreign-registered vehicles is due to rampant abuse of the system.
Domestic Trade, Co-operative and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said yesterday the ban should not be seen as a violation of the rights of Malaysians as there had been too many problems since the policy was introduced last August.
“Many Malaysians abused the policy by becoming agents for foreigners.
“These touts would wait at the border and collect RM10 per foreign-registered car and fuel it up,” said Ismail Sabri, who is on a working visit here.
He added that most of those vehicles also had modified fuel tanks that could fill up to 300 litres of petrol.
“It was too difficult to control. Petrol station owners had been complaining about the same Malaysians who would come and fuel up multiple times, each time in a different car,” he added.
