Bus converted into courtroom to hear cases in Sabah villages

KOTA KINABALU: A refurbished 25-seater bus is bringing justice to people in the rural areas of Sabah.

The bus, donated by the state government, has been converted into a mobile courtroom to allow magistrate cases to be heard in far flung towns and villages, such as Kundasang, Weston and Pitas.

The mobile courtroom, which has been operating since March last year, was officially launched by Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman yesterday.

Also present was Chief Judge for Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri Richard Manlanjum who had mooted the idea for the courtroom.

Describing the mobile courtroom as an innovative approach to better serve the public, Musa said other government agencies should learn from the Judicial Department.

“Our role in the government is to provide the best possible service to the people.

“We must never lose sight of this,” he said.

He said the mobile courtroom was a cost-effective way of ensuring that justice was served, adding that the facility cost some RM250,000.

Sabah Judicial Department director Ismail Berahim said the cost of constructing a courthouse was about RM3mil to RM4mil.

“The mobile courtroom enables us to conduct Magistrate Court hearings in smaller towns or even villages, instead of having folks incur expenses to travel to bigger towns for their cases,” he pointed out.

Ismail said the department, which had been holding hearings in towns along the west coast and interior districts, was planning to extend the service to the east coast.

He said the department hoped to obtain more buses for this purpose.
