KUALA LUMPUR: Random urine tests will be conducted on commercial bus drivers to ensure they are fit to drive, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha.
The tests would be conducted in bus terminals until Jan 30, he said.
He added that the ministry would work together with the National Anti-Drug Agency.
Kong spoke at a press conference at Pudu Sentral here yesterday after launching the national road safety campaign in conjunction with Chinese New Year.
Kong also announced the Ops Sikap 25 would be conducted by the police until Jan 30.
For those driving home for the Chinese New Year, Kong said the roads were not the place to let their ego take over.
“Do not show off and do not race. The Year of the Dragon is a symbol of strength and power to the Chinese community.
“However, whether you are driving a luxury car or an ordinary one, you must remember that we are all using the same roads.
“We also advise parents, especially those with teenagers, to be aware of their children's activities and ensure that they practise road safety measures,” he said.
Kong urged the people to use public transport when going back to their hometown as it was the safest mode of transportation.
“Statistics from Ops Sikap 24 show there were no deaths involving public transport during Hari Raya last year.
“For the previous Chinese New Year celebrations, Ops Sikap 23 recorded only one death,” he said.
