PETALING JAYA: Male taxi drivers have no issues with the fairer sex sharing the roads, but wonder if the women will be “man” enough to take the heat that comes with the job.
Some women tend to panic and get stressed faster than men, claimed a male taxi driver here.
“Being a taxi driver can be very stressful,” said Sunil Raj, 31.
“Some women drivers tend to lose their temper especially when faced with passengers who pressure them, and expect them to break traffic rules just to reach their destination on time,” he said.
Zainal Abidin Mohd Zain, 54, said most female taxi drivers he had encountered were daring ones.
“They seem to drive more aggressively than men, making sudden turns and scaring other drivers on the road,” he said.
However, Danny Ling, 50, who has been driving taxis for almost 22 years, said it was not a safe job for women.
“They will be exposed to a lot of risks, especially if they drive at night,” he said.
He was commenting on the launch of women-only taxis in conjunction with International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women last Sunday.
Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Senator Datuk Heng Seai Kie, who launched the service, said there were currently only 50 women taxi drivers and encouraged more women to take on the job.
Another taxi driver, Rozaidi Abd Rahim, 42, who has been driving taxis for the past 14 years said, “It is shocking even for us men to see how fast these girls drive.”
However, he said women taxi drivers were less likely to cheat their passengers.
