A multi-storey car park has been proposed for the Bukit Mertajam Recreation Park in Penang to cater to the increasing number of visitors.

State Forestry Department director Shah Rani Ahmad Zailan said the department would soon submit a proposal to the Federal Government to build a multi-storey car park at the present car park site.

He said the multi-storey car park was proposed with the aim of preventing trees from being cut down for the expansion of the present car park.

Shah Rani said the department would seek the help of the Public Works Department to design the multi-storey car park.

He said more than 60,000 people visited the 311ha park last year and the number was increasing.

Shah Rani said this at a meeting with Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) representatives, Bukit Mertajam MP Chong Eng, Padang Lalang assemblyman Michael Tan Cheong Heng and MPSP councilor Oon Neow Aun on Tuesday.

MPSP urban services director Rosnani Mahmud represented council president Maimunah Mohd Shariff.

The meeting was held following public complaints on the shortage of car park space and littering in the park.

Sha Rani said some visitors threw rubbish indiscriminately although rubbish bins were provided all over the park.

“We are trying to educate the public by placing more signboards to tell them not to dirty the park,” he added.
