City Hall looks at solving congestion

Postby admin » Sat Nov 11, 2006 3:07 am

CITY Hall is looking into widening a congestion-prone stretch of Jalan Genting Klang where a bus stop and taxi stand are located.

The bus stop and taxi stand near the Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet are the cause of traffic woes at the 150m stretch as many Rapid KL, Metrobus and Permata Kiara buses clog up the area during peak hours.

Senior officials from City Hall’s Urban Transport, Public Works and Economic Planning and Develop-ment Co-ordination departments visited the area yesterday following Wangsa Maju MP Yew Teong Look’s request to resolve the issue.

Yew, who is also Federal Territo-ries Ministry parliamentary secretary, said City Hall would recheck the status of the service road in front of the KFC outlet and study the possibility of widening the stretch to three lanes for Wangsa Maju-bound traffic.

After the stretch is widened, the bus stop and taxi stand will be moved into the service road.

That, he said, would provide more space for the buses to manoeuvre so that vehicular traffic would not be affected.

If that cannot be done, the alternative is to remove part of the road shoulder and move both the bus stop and taxi stand further inside without encroaching into the service road, he added.

“City Hall will also close the Jalan Teratai junction and direct traffic to the inner road and Jalan Prima Setapak for motorists coming in and out of Jalan Genting Klang,” he said.

Yew said he had received complaints that many buses waited for passengers at the bus stop, causing a back-up in traffic along the road.

“There is a long-term plan to upgrade and widen Jalan Genting Klang from the Jalan Gombak junction to the Taman Melati junction.

“The estimated RM80mil project is expected to resolve traffic problems in this area,” he said.
