SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government will not bear the compensation for land needed to make way for the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) project.
The cost would be borne by the Federal Government, said Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim.
“From our previous meetings, it was understood that the Federal Government will compensate owners of land needed for the project,” he told the state assembly meeting yesterday.
Questioned by Dr Shafie Abu Bakar (PAS-Bangi) on the exact cost involved to kickstart the project, Khalid said it had not been ascertained yet.
“The respective departments in the local councils are responsible for issuing notices to the land owners,” he said during question time.
Khalid added that it was important to take proactive measures in this matter to avoid problems later.
“The people and the state government have to work together in order to solve this issue in a proper manner, which would later benefit both,” he said.
Khalid said the MRT, which was scheduled to run its first wagon by 2016, would reduce the number of private vehicles on the road from 95% to 50%.
