KUALA LUMPUR: Police have given more than enough time to the 1.07 million traffic offenders who have been blacklisted for various traffic offences.

Federal Traffic Police chief Senior Asst Comm II Datuk Abdul Aziz Yusof said police had given these errant traffic offenders, who were caught on camera or during “saman ekor” operations, several years to come forward and settle their summonses.

He also said that the police and Road Transport Department (JPJ) had the power to blacklist these people.

“Some of these summonses date back to year 2000, so to say that the police didn’t give them enough time to settle is unfair.

“Motorists should not complain when we had initially given them three months to sort them out,” said SAC Abdul Aziz.

It was reported yesterday that a total of 1.07 million traffic offenders had been blacklisted for not answering the summons notices.

SAC Abdul Aziz said that since April this year police had decided to blacklist the errant motorists for ignoring the traffic notices.

“A summons notice is to inform a vehicle owner that the vehicle has been caught on camera committing traffic offences.

“If vehicle owners claim that they were not driving the vehicle, then they must show proof that they were not in their cars or other vehicles at the time, location and date stated in the notices,” he said.

In Putrajaya, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the police were merely doing their job when they issued summonses to road users who violated traffic rules, reports Bernama.

The Prime Minister said it was an offence to break traffic regulations.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have issued more than 10 million “saman ekor” (traffic offences caught on camera) since 2000 and motorists who ignored these summonses risk being hauled to the police station.

Federal Traffic Police chief SAC II Datuk Abdul Aziz Yusof said police could bring those who were issued with warrants of arrest to the stations and they would only be released on police bail.

“They will also be barred from renewing their road tax and driving licences. So it’s best that they come forward and settle the summonses,” he said.

SAC II Abdul Aziz said that so far 2.5 million summons notices had been issued and 1.7 million road users have been blacklisted.

“Saman Ekor” is summons notice 170A which is issued for offences caught on camera, speeding, parking tickets or summonses where police could not stop the offenders.

Asked if enough time had been given to motorists to settle or sort out their summonses, SAC II Abdul Aziz said:

“At least half of these summonses dated back from 2000. They have been given enough time to settle.”

He said vehicle owners who claimed that they were not the offenders must show proof that they were not in their vehicles at the time.

“If somebody used your vehicle and a summons was issued to you, you must verify that it was someone else,” he said.

He added that if the vehicle owner brought along the actual traffic offender, the summons would be reissued to that person.

On claims by motorists that summonses were sent late or they never received them, he said all notices were sent through AR-registered mail.

KUALA LUMPUR: Those with saman ekor (traffic offences caught on camera) should be allowed to renew their road tax, said Pokok Sena MP Datuk Mahfuz Omar.

Many vehicle owners, he added, could not renew their road tax because they were burdened by accumulated summonses.

“If the Government insists on collecting summonses by barring road tax renewals, I worry that some may resort to using forged road tax stickers (to keep driving). Syndicates dealing in forged road tax stickers could also flourish.

“The nation will lose revenue from both the summonses and road tax,” he said at a press conference in the Parliament lobby yesterday.

Recently, federal traffic police chief Senior Asst Comm (II) Datuk Abdul Aziz Yusof said police issued more than 10 million saman ekor since 2000; and motorists who ignored these summonses risked being hauled up to the police station.

He added that police could bring those issued with warrants of arrest to the stations and they would only be released on police bail.

Mahfuz called on the Government to find a way to recover the fines for summonses without causing a hassle to the public.

Blacklisting of traffic offenders who fail to pay fines lifted temporarily.

PUTRAJAYA: The Cabinet has decided to lift from now until Feb 28 next year, the blacklisting system which bans traffic offenders who fail to pay their summonses from renewing their licences and road tax, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said Wednesday.

He said, however, that traffic offenders would still have to clear their existing summonses, either by instalment or full payment.
