A TOTAL of 365 traffic policemen will be deployed to closely monitor 15 accident prone stretches in Penang during Ops Sikap XIII.

Penang traffic operations chief DSP K. Wari said five stretches were in the island’s northeast district, two in the southwest district while eight others were in Seberang Prai.

“Besides setting up speed traps and roadblocks at various spots, our men will also patrol accident-prone areas throughout the 15-day operation to reduce the number of accidents during the festive season,” he said after the operation kicked off yesterday.

DSP Wari said stretches in the northeast district that had recorded frequent accidents were Jalan Masjid Negeri, Jalan Air Itam, Pe-nang Bridge, Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah and Jelutong Expressway.

Police have also identified Lebuhraya Bayan Baru and Jalan Balik Pulau in the southwest district as dangerous stretches.

“The killer stretches in north Seberang Prai are Jalan Chain Fer-ry, Jalan Permatang Pauh, and Ja-lan Bagan Jermal while those in the central region are Jalan Kulim, Jalan Usahawan and Jalan Prai Baru.”

He added that in south Seberang Prai, the danger spots were Jalan Sungai Bakap and the North-South highway.

DSP Wari urged motorists to be cautious on the road and follow traffic regulations to avoid getting involved in accidents.

He also urged the public to contact the traffic police operation room at 04-2221714 if there was an accident or major traffic congestion.

He also appealed to the public to be patient over the slow-moving traffic on Penang Bridge which was undergoing extension work.

In Alor Star, Kedah police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Syed Ismail Syed Azizan said some 250 traffic cops would be involved in monitoring 22 accident-prone areas in the state.

“They will man speed traps and patrol the areas to reduce the ac-cidents during the festive season,” he said after presenting Raya aid to widows and special children of police personnel yesterday.

He said the state level Ops Sikap XIII would be held tomorrow at the Alor Star South toll plaza.

He said during the 15-day operation, policemen would also go undercover to check on express buses.
