Demerit system hits snag

THE government is not happy with the state of efficacy of the Motor Vehicles (Demerit Points) Penalty System, or Kejara, said Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri at Dewan Negara yesterday.

Rahim said there was a need to review the procedures to make it more effective.

"For example, we need to ensure that the show-cause notice is actually sent out to the offenders' address displayed on the MyKad.

"Most of the addresses are outdated and as a result, the notices do not reach the offenders and this cripples the system," said Rahim in reply to a question from Senator Mumtaz Md Nawi.

Mumtaz had wanted to know whether the Kejara system had been effectively implemented and the number of provisional driving licence holders punished for accumulating excess demerit points from 2005 to this year.

Rahim said about 200 licences had been cancelled and 3,633 more suspended within that period.
