PETALING JAYA: The bad attitude and selfishness of drivers have been blamed for the high incidence of road accidents and deaths in Malaysia, according to an online poll being conducted as part of the Malaysians Unite for Road Safety (Mufors) initiative.

Out of the 1,500 respondents to date, 36.6% or 549 felt that bad attitude and selfishness were the main reasons behind the high rate of road accidents and deaths.

The poll also revealed that human error and careless driving (30% or 450) were also listed as contributing factors.

In a statement yesterday, Mufors claimed that Government statistics also revealed an average of 18 deaths occur on Malaysian roads everyday while road accidents cost the Malaysian economy a staggering RM9.3bil annually.

Other factors like road conditions (15%), lack of enforcement (10%), lenient punishment for traffic offences (6.9%) and questionable decisions such as discounts for traffic summonses (6.6%) were also blamed for the high incidence of road accidents.
