PUTRAJAYA: There is no one with a criminal record among the 14,757 school bus drivers licensed by the Commercial Vehicle Licencing Board (CVLB).
“It is our standard operating procedure to check the background of those applying for any kind of licence issued by CVLB and applicants with criminal records will be rejected,” board chairman Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique told a press conference here yesterday.
On July 26, a van driver had parked the vehicle along Jalan Othman in Petaling Jaya and forced himself on his 10-year-old passenger.
A kindergarten teacher heard screams for help and alerted passers-by, who caught the 51-year-old driver and beat him up before handing him over to police.
The father of three has claimed trial to charges of sexual assault against the child and another young girl, aged nine.
Halimah said the incident involved an illegal van driver, not one licensed by the board.
“I would like to stress on the importance for school bus drivers, engaged by parents to ferry their children, to be licensed.
“There are so many consequences if they hire illegal operators,” said Halimah.
