NINE Mat Rempit were arrested during a three-hour police operation in the Pantai Bersih area in Butterworth, Penang.
The youths, aged between 18 and 28, were among 80 motorcyclists screened along the Butterworth Outer Ring Road (BORR) after the Bagan Ajam toll plaza starting from 5.30pm on Sunday.
State Internal Security and Public Order chief Supt Wan Aziz Wan Husin said 14 motorcycles were also seized after they were found to have been illegally modified.
“Nineteen officers including three officers were involved in the operation which was conducted following complaints about Mat Rempit activities by residents staying in the area.
“They are threatening the safety of other road users using BORR with their antics. We are going all out to stop their activities before someone gets injured,” he told reporters at the scene.
Supt Wan Aziz said the nine Mat Rempit were arrested for reckless and dangerous riding under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which carried a jail term of up to five years with a possible RM15,000 fine.
On Nov 9, police also caught 14 Mat Rempit in the act of racing each other along BORR.
