Face Court Action For Not Paying Smoke Emission Fines

Postby admin » Thu Nov 27, 2008 12:11 pm

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 25 (Bernama) -- Lorry owners and drivers will be charged in court for not settling fines for smoke emission, said Department of Environment director-general Kalsom Ghani.

"As lorry operators choose to ignore our warnings, we have no choice but to take them to court," she told reporters after heading an operation codenamed 'Ops Asap Hitam' at the Sungai Besi Toll Plaza here Tuesday.

They will charged under the Environmental Quality (Control of Emission from Diesel and Petrol Engines) Regulations 1996 which carries a maximum fine of RM100,000 or five years' jail or both.

In a similar operation yesterday, the department fined two lorries and barred them from using the road for emitting excessive smoke.
