NANYANG Siang Pau reported that four out of the 19 toll concessionaires had agreed to lower their toll rates but did not name them.
The daily learnt that discussions between the Government and toll concessionaires to lower their rates were not smooth sailing with some threatening to take the Government to court.
They pointed out that lowering rates would contravene the government’s contract with them.
Some of the companies even used the petrol price increase as a reason to refuse the drop in toll rates, according to a source.
“They claimed that following the petrol price increase, fewer vehicles were using the highway causing them to suffer losses and it was therefore difficult for them to lower their rates,” said the source.
Works Minister Datuk Mohd Zin Mohamed said negotiations between the Government and the concessionaire companies were still ongoing.
He also appealed for more time to settle the issue when asked if the new rate would be known soon.
