Five million vehicles over 10 years old
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 5,110,326 out of 19,820,842 registered vehicles in Malaysia were over 10 years old as at August, Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri said in the Dewan Rakyat.
The ministry had always emphasised the safety aspects of all vehicles regardless of their age, he said yesterday.
“Apart from enforcement action by the Road Transport Department and the police, safety control measures through computerised vehicle inspection by Puspakom are also required to ensure that vehicles are roadworthy,” he told Salahuddin Ayub (PAS-Kubang Kerian).
Abdul Rahim said the inspection was in several categories, including commercial vehicles in need of preliminary examination before registration and periodic inspection in the first two years and every six months for the following years.
For private vehicles, examinations must be done before any modifications on the vehicle or change of ownership are made.
Meanwhile, the use of tinted screens was still allowed on vehicles as long as it did not exceed the prescribed limit, he said when replying to Datuk Seri Abdul Ghapur Salleh (BN-Kalabakan).
A vehicle is allowed to install tinted screens with a transparency of not less than 70% on the windscreen and 50% of the side and rear screens.
