FUEL subsidy for the transport sector is projected to soar to RM16.38 billion this year, the Dewan Rakyat was told yesterday.

Deputy Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim said in 2008, the amount of subsidies borne by the government for the sector totalled RM13.123 billion and it reduced to RM3.873 billion in 2009.

However, last year, it rose to RM7.489 billion.

Replying to a question by Datuk Eric Majimbun (SAPP-Sepanggar), Rohani said the decrease and increase were due to changes in global oil prices.

To a supplementary question by Majimbun, Rohani said the ministry had adopted a formula known as "nano-technology" to curb smuggling of subsidiesed diesel.

"This formula enables us to trace subsidised fuel through its colour and can be used as evidence in court."
