Import ban on unsafe bike tyres

SEREMBAN: The government will ban the import of motorcycle tyres that do not comply with Sirim's safety standards.

Road safety department director-general Datuk Suret Singh said the Customs Department would announce the date the ban would take effect soon.

"The ban on the imported tyres that do not meet Sirim standard based on periodic checks is only a beginning phase. Once it takes effect, we would also focus on other areas such as selling old stock of tyres, followed by educating the public on the importance of road safety. All these will be done in stages," he said.

Suret was speaking to reporters at a joint tyre-checking campaign, from Sept 4 to 9, organised by Transport Ministry, Road Safety Department and Continental Sime Tyre PJ Sdn Bhd at the Seremban rest area of the North-South Expressway, near here, yesterday.

Suret said the government also planed to enforce Sirim standards on brake parts such as linings and pads on vehicles.

This is expected to be implemented by early next year.

"We have already discussed the matter with an automotive company and they have agreed to come to work together to ensure all vehicles on the road are fixed with quality brake parts."
