Incentives for travelling off-peak hours

KUALA LUMPUR: Drivers may be offered incentives for travelling during off-peak hours to ease congestion on the Lebuhraya Damansara-Puchong.

Works Minister Datuk Mohd Zin Mohamed told Hee Loy Sian (DAP - Petaling Jaya Selatan) in Dewan Rakyat Thursday that these were the few options the Govenrment was considering.

"For instance, drivers will be given rebates if they leave earlier in the morning for work. Another suggestion is for the LDP concessionaire to build a new alignment for the highway.

"However, this will cost a lot for the concessionaire as it will involve land acquisition and ultimately, take up public funds," he said, adding that the ministry was also thinking about upgrading facilities like Touch ‘n Go to even more advanced technology like those used in Australia and Japan.

Hee had complained that despite having to pay RM1.60 toll each time drivers use the LDP, the highway remains congested.

Zin said the highway had led to the development of new residential areas along its alignment and this had inevitably resulted in traffic congestion.

“From 1999 until 2006, the Government paid some RM480.54mil in subsidy when drivers were paying RM1 for the toll when it should have been RM1.50.

“From Jan 1, 2007, the Government has paid out about RM150mil in subsidy when the toll charge is RM1.60 when it should have been RM2.10,” he said.

For the New Pantai Expressway, Zin said the Government had not paid out any subsidy as the toll charges had never been restructured.

He also said the detailed study initiated by his ministry on toll concessions would be ready in three months’ time.

“Once this is complete, we will review the agreements and every decision will be referred to the Cabinet,” he said.
