PEKAN: Factory operator Mohd Afendi Mat Rani turned 21 yesterday. To wish him "Happy Birthday" was his mother.
Nothing unusual about that. But what was unique was the venue -- the magistrate's court here.
Mohd Afendi will never forget this birthday. He was slapped with a 12-month jail sentence and fined RM5,000 for performing dangerous stunts on his motorcycle last February.
He will, however, have company in jail. His younger sibling, Mohd Azhar, 19, who committed a similar offence, was given a similar punishment.
After the sentencing, his mother conveyed the birthday greeting to Mohd Afendi before he was whisked away.
The brothers, from Kampung Marhum, Kuala Pahang here, were charged under the Road Transport Act 1987 with riding their motorcycle in a zig-zag manner between Km3 and Km8 of the Kuantan-Pekan trunk road about 10pm on Feb 9.
The maximum penalty for the offence is five years' jail and a fine of between RM5,000 and RM15,000.
Mohd Afendi and Mohd Azhar both pleaded for leniency, saying their salaries as factory operators were low and it was difficult to pay high fines.
Chief Inspector Mohd Nor Affandy Yusof, prosecuting, asked the court to pass a deterrent sentence to send a message to other motorcyclists.
He added that the brothers had caused inconvenience to other road users.
Magistrate Sazlina Safie ordered the jail term to start from the date of their arrest and an additional five months' jail if they failed to pay the fine.
The brothers also had their driving licence suspended for two years.http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/NST/ ... index_html
