JOHOR BARU: The city of Johor Baru is to get the first high-tech smart patrol vehicle in the country.
Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) Mayor Datuk Mohd Naim Nasir said the patrol van, manned by police personnel, was like a mobile operation centre.
He said the patrol team would be able to monitor the situation on the streets while patrolling the areas as the vehicle would be linked to 30 closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs) set up at strategic locations.
"If this works, the idea and the system may be used in the whole Iskandar Development Region.
"We are serious and will do whatever we can to ensure the safety of everyone in Johor Baru,'' he said.
Mohd Naim said the project, a joint operation between MBJB and the police, was listed in the third phase of the plan to build a smart, safe and comfortable city to live and work in.
Also in the third phase is the setting up of an additional 12 CCTVs and four nomadic cameras for the patrol vehicle.
Locations for the CCTVs include Jalan Tebrau, Komtar building, City Square and Holiday Plaza.
Currently, 18 CCTVs are installed within MBJB's jurisdiction.
Mohd Naim said the project, estimated to cost RM1.5mil, is expected to be completed this year.
"We hope to have 69 CCTVs by 2010,'' he said while leading reporters to visit the operation centre at Menara Tabung Haji here. The Mayor also showed reporters a videoclip captured by a CCTV of a man and his friends destroying a pedestrian barricade in the town centre.
He said the group was later arrested by police.
Mohd Naim said the first three CCTVs were set up in 2001 with the aim of monitoring and controlling traffic flow along Jalan Tebrau, a main access road into the city.
He said more CCTVs were installed in stages in 2005. This was part of a joint programme by MBJB and the police to fight crime, following the rising cases of snatch theft and robbery.
Johor deputy police chief Senior Asst Comm (I) Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Sharif said the existing 18 CCTVs have proven to be effective in enhancing the police’s crime operations.
