I REFER to the letter from T.K.T. of Malacca ("Why should south-bound motorists pay up at Jelapang plaza?" -- NST, Dec 18).
PLUS Expressways (PLUS) wishes to clarify that the North-South Expressway (NSE) stretch between the Jelapang toll plaza and the Ipoh Selatan interchange is an untolled stretch which is used by both the NSE mainline traffic and the Ipoh local traffic. About 70 per cent of the traffic on this stretch is local.
Expressway users from Penang to Kuala Lumpur make two stops, i.e. at the Jelapang toll plaza to pay toll for the distance travelled and at the Ipoh Selatan toll plaza to collect a transit ticket before resuming their journey (vice versa for users from Kuala Lumpur to Penang).
This configuration allows the Ipoh local traffic to travel toll-free between Jelapang and the Ipoh Selatan interchange.
However, with increasing traffic, congestion and accidents are becoming more frequent at the approach to the toll plaza.
To alleviate the congestion and enhance the safety of road users, PLUS, under the supervision of the Malaysian Highway Authority, has, since 2005, commenced modification works along the stretch known as the Through Traffic Project.
The project entails the separation of the Ipoh local traffic from the NSE mainline through traffic as well as the demolition of the Jelapang and Ipoh Selatan toll plazas.
The Through Traffic Project involves land acquisition (more than 100 lots in total) as well as the construction of about 14km of local road on each side of the NSE, 14 new bridges and new off-mainline toll plazas for traffic exiting/entering Ipoh.
The project is targeted for completion by July next year.
Upon completion of the toll plaza relocation, expressway users between Kuala Lumpur and Penang will no longer have to stop at Ipoh Selatan and Jelapang.
