THE two-lane highway from the Kulim Hi-Tech Park in Kedah to Tumpat in Kelantan should be widened to four lanes, deputy Kedah Umno chief Tan Sri Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir said.
He said the stretch, which bypassed Baling, Pengkalan Hulu, Grik and Jeli would be a major contributor toward the success of the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER).
Abdul Kadir, who is also Kulim/Bandar Baharu MP, said this at the Kulim/Bandar Baharu Umno division delegates’ conference here yesterday.
In supporting the call, Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali, who opened the conference, said there was land for the Banding Lake Bridge in his state to be widened from two lanes to four.
“The border towns in Perak, Kedah and Kelantan are presently under-developed. So, emphasis should be given to create more industries there,” he said.
Tajol Rosli said the RM24.5bil northern pipeline project was expected to help spur development in the border towns.
The 300km pipeline, to be built middle of next year, will begin from Yan, Kedah, pass through northern Perak and Penang and end at Bachok, Kelantan.
