PETALING JAYA: KL Monorail's services are expected to improve when 12 new sets of four-car trains replace the current two-car trains.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said KL Monorail was currently operating at 35% over capacity.

“Projecting that the KL Monorail line will operate at 85% over capacity within the next few years, the Government has decided to double its capacity within two years with the new four-car monorail fleet,” he said at the signing ceremony between Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad and Scomi Rail Berhad for the KL Monorail fleet expansion project here yesterday.

Under the RM494mil agreement, Prasarana has contracted Scomi to increase the capacity of the current KL Monorail line to 6,400 passengers per hour per direction with the new four-car trains.

The first set of four-car trains is expected to be operational from Nov 15 next year while the last two sets of the new trains will commence service on July 31, 2013.

At the same time, all 11 monorail stations will be upgraded to cater for the increase in ridership and to accommodate the length of the four-car trains.
