KUALA LUMPUR: Several roads around Dataran Merdeka here will be closed for several hours for three days starting Thursday, to facilitate preparations for the Colours of 1Malaysia 2010 parade on Saturday.
According to a statement from the Tourism Ministry, Jalan Raja, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Esfahan will be closed from 7pm Thursday to 1am Friday; from 5pm on Friday for full dress rehearsal until it is over; and from 5pm on Saturday until the parade is over.
Other roads involved are Lebuh Ampang, Lebuh Pasar, Jalan Tun Perak, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Raja Laut, heading towards Jalan Raja, which will be closed from 5pm to 1am.
The 1.5km parade by 6,000 people of various races and ethnic groups, performing dances on the street, will start in Jalan Raja and head towards Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Isfahan and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman.
The statement said the highlight for this year's event would be a mega dikir barat performance by a 5,000-strong group, which is expected to be entered into the Malaysia Book of Records.
The event was launched in 1999 and has since become an annual event. It will opened by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak will be present.
