Lekas ready for Raya rush

Start your holiday this coming festive season by taking a scenic drive along the Lekas Highway, the alternative route to Seremban from Kajang.

The first stretch of the highway from Kajang to Mantin has been in operation since August 2008 while the second to Setul was opened in March last year.

Lekas Sdn Bhd assistant general manager Yap Pak How said the 44.3km highway had been in operation since August last year.

The highway starts at the end of the Kajang Silk Highway and ends at Paroi in Negri Sembilan.

Yap said those travelling to Kuala Pilah would also find the highway a convenient way to get to Kuala Lumpur.

According to her, many still do not know how to access the highway and their alternative route signage can only be displayed during festive seasons.

To get onto the highway, one has to take Exit 1804A that is accessible from the Kajang Silk Highway, Cheras-Kajang Highway and the South Klang Valley Highway (SKVE) towards the Silk Highway.

Those travelling along the PLUS North-South Highway can also access the highway at Exit 210 near Country Heights.

From the south, the highway starts from Paroi which is accessible via a straight road through Senawang at Exit 220.

There are six interchanges along the highway at Kajang Selatan, Semenyih, Pajam, Mantin, Setul and Ampangan and a signalised junction at Paroi.

Seremban is accesible from either Setul or Paroi as well as Ampangan in between while there are three tolls along the highway.

Apart from serving as the alternative route to the PLUS highway, users will also find that several places of interests have become much more accessible.

One of these places is Mantin that is well-known for its durian orchards.

Zakaria Din, 45, who is leasing one of the orchards in Mantin, said these days it was hard to say when the durian season would come around.

“The lease period is usually for three to four months, from flowering to fruit season,” he said.

In addition to the lucrative side income he gets from leasing the orchard and selling the durians, Zakaria spends a lot of time in it as well.

“During the one-and-a-half months when the fruits start falling, I am at the orchard all the time. The first durians to fall are usually not good while close to the end of the season, durians do not sell as well because people have had enough of it,” he said.

The orchard he was leasing now until September offered mainly the Raja Kunyit variety though he also recommended the 101 and D2 types out of the roughly 15 available.

Other places of interest that are connected to Lekas include Broga Hill, the Jeram Toi waterfall and ostrich farm in Jelebu, Negri Sembilan, the Seremban International Golf Club and Istana Seri Menanti.

Those travelling along the highway will also get to experience a bit of culture as they approach the rest area at Beranang as well as the toll plazas.
