Massive facelift for Chowrasta Multi-storey car park and travelators proposed for iconic market
GEORGE TOWN: A multi-storey car park and travelators are among the proposals under an RM11mil plan to rejuvenate one of Penang’s oldest markets — the Chowrasta Market.
Ong Jin Cheng, director of Arkitek LLA Sdn Bhd, which made the proposal, said car parking issues were among the problems raised by both traders and customers during a survey conducted between March 18 and March 21.
The firm has been engaged by the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) as the project’s contractor to rejuvenate the three-storey Chowrasta Market.
“We proposed that one third of the back portion of Chowrasta Market on Jalan Kuala Kangsar be demolished to build a five-storey car park with 153 parking bays,” he said.
He said there would be a ramp built on the side of the market facing Jalan Chowrasta, linking it with the first level of the car park.
“The ground level of the market would not be touched because the multi-storey car park will be built starting from level one,” he said when tabling the proposal at Dewan Sri Pinang yesterday.
