HEAVY thunderstorms in the past couple of days have been causing massive traffic jams in the Klang Valley due to fallen trees and flash floods.
Traffic came to a standstill on most major highways and roads heading out of the city during the rush hours causing many to spend hours on the road.
The thunderstorm on Tuesday which started at about 5.30pm in Petaling Jaya worsened the already congested traffic in the area.
Buvenesvary Gunasekaran from Shah Alam was stuck on the Federal Highway for more than an hour near Hilton Petaling Jaya at about 6.15pm while on her way to Jalan Pantai Baru.
“The drive there usually takes me 25 minutes on a normal working day.
“I was heading towards Dataran Merdeka to run some errands but decided to turn back as the traffic was bad,” she said.
Account manager Carole Sai who was organising an event in Jalan Universiti decided to turn up early at the venue after taking an hour just to drive a distance of about 1km along that stretch.
“My office is barely three kilometres away at SS20/27 and even then I decided to take the back route through Jalan 17/21 to avoid the long traffic jam.
“But the moment I took a left turn into Jalan Universiti, traffic was at a standstill.
“I needed to go to the opposite side and almost wanted to park my car by the roadside and walk across but decided to drive as it would not make a difference as I was already very late.
“On Tuesday, I was at the venue at 3pm, but the thunderstorm caused many guests to turn up late, including my boss who took about two hours to get here using the same stretch,” she said.
Jalan Dato Abu Bakar was also badly congested especially the lane heading towards Jalan Universiti.
Bazli Shah, who works at Phileo Damansara 2, said it took him one-and-a-half hours to get out from his office, make a U-turn at Sprint Highway and go through Jalan Dato Abu Bakar, which is about two kilometers away.
“It would have been much faster if I had walked.
“It was already 7pm and traffic should have eased up but it was at a standstill even before I exited my office building perimeters” he said.
The Golden Triangle in Kuala Lumpur was also badly affected with many stuck for hours to travel short distances.
Vanessa Raj, who was heading to Pavilion KL at about 7pm said it took her 45 minutes to drive from Changkat Bukit Bintang to Jalan Bukit Bintang which is about 500m away.
