More funds for roads

About RM170mil will be set aside for improving and maintaining roads in Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) budget for next year.

Mayor Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad Ismail said DBKL had requested more funds from the Federal Government for this purpose.

“The money will be used to maintain roads and for landscaping work,” he told reporters after presenting the prizes to the staff and departments for their innovative ideas brought up in conjunction with the DBKL Innovation Day 2011.

“We can only spend as much as we earn. We cannot please everyone and the budget should not address only certain segments of society,” he said.

He added that feedback were sought from people’s representatives and residents before coming up with the budget.

Fuad said most people were concerned over the assessment tax which had remained the same for 18 years.

“The collection of taxes is quite good at 92%. In some cases, the businesses may have wound up. We will take these cases to court,” he said, adding DBKL has also reduced their expenditure over time.

It was reported the RM2.17bil budget would also focus on cleanliness with RM196mil allocated for waste management and RM96mil for maintenance of public parks and playgrounds.

Assessment tax was the main source of revenue for City Hall with a 4% increase of RM1.38bil compared with 2010.

About 60% of revenue came from assessment tax amounting to RM810mil, 17% from development charges (RM239mil), 4.5% from federal government grants (RM62.7mil), and 2.7% from rental of public housing schemes (RM37mil). Some RM1.33bil will go for administrative expenses and RM847mil for development.

City Hall’s budget is usually announced by the mayor in December every year.

During the mayor’s speech at the DBKL Innovation Day, he said innovations had to be practical.
