Motorist asked to refrain from stopping at new Skudai Bridge

JOHOR BARU: Motorists have been reminded not to stop along the newly opened Skudai Bridge especially at nights as it might jeopardise their safety.

Iskandar Regional Development Authority (Irda) chief executive officer Ismail Ibrahim said more security personnel would be deployed to ensure that motorists refrained from doing so.

“Apart from deploying security personnel, we will also put up temporary no-stop signages along the bridge,’’ he told StarMetro recently.

Ismail said Irda would also bring up the matter to the Johor State Road Safety Committee on appropriate actions that could be taken against those who flouted the rule.

The RM120mil bridge is part of the RM945mil New Coastal Highway (NCH) that links Johor Baru city centre to Nusajaya which is expected to be opened fully in the second-quarter of 2012.

The dual three-lane bridge with a width of 15.29 m is wider than the existing Penang Bridge and the 605 m bridge is the longest bridge of its kind ever built in Johor.

“Motorists probably think it is safe for them to stop along the bridge as it provides a breathtaking view of Johor Baru and Singapore,’’ he said.

Ismail added the bridge structure was very unique because it crossed over two rivers – Sungai Skudai and Sungai Danga.

He said the most challenging part in the construction of the bridge was building the supporting beams on several small islands on the river.

Ismail said, motorists using the partially opened highway should adhere to the temporary speed limit along the stretch as construction works were still on-going.

He said upon its completion, the NCH would reduce travelling time from the city centre to Nusajaya to about 15mins from 30mins currently.

It would also disperse traffic congestion by 30% in the city centre.
