KLANG: The closure of Jalan Pos Baru saw thousands of motorists being caught in a traffic jam.
Drivers were confused and angry at the traffic diversions in the heart of the town and the situation worsened with the last-minute Deepavali shopping in Little India, about half a kilometre away.
Other roads, including Jalan Batu Tiga Lama, Jalan Tengku Kelana, Jalan Pasar, and Bulatan 100, also saw massive congestion.
The road closure was to allow for the demolition of a pedestrian overhead bridge in Jalan Tengah to make way for the RM230mil third bridge Federal project to ease traffic congestion at the Kota and Musaeddin bridges.
The third bridge across Sungai Klang is scheduled to start in the middle of next year and due for completion in three years.
K. Sitarasu, 43, said the congestion was bad even along Jalan Pasar.
“I was caught in the jam for an hour for a journey that usually takes a few minutes,” he said, adding that no prior announcement was made and signboards put up to warn people of the closure.
“It should be done after the festive season when the streets are less busy,” he added.
Clerk Rosita Abdul Rahman said it took her two-and-a-half hours to reach Port Klang from work.
“Usually the journey is only half an hour,” she said.
Kapar MCA Youth division chairman Datuk Song Kee Chai said the Public Works Department should not bulldoze ideas without notifying the public first.
“Many motorists didn’t know about the road closure and are confused by the traffic system, which lead to the massive congestion,” he said.
A PWD officer said Jalan Pos Baru, which will be closed for the duration of the third bridge project, would be opened during Deepavali and the Sultan of Selangor birthday celebrations in December.
Four lanes of the six-lane Jalan Tengah would also be closed, he said.
