MOTORISTS are still experiencing electrical jolts at the free public carpark in Section 10, off Jalan Gasing in Petaling Jaya, while walking under the high transmission lines during rain.
The Selangor MCA Public Complaints Bureau have been receiving complaints from motorists of electrical shocks during and just after heavy rain.
One complainant, Ee Fah, said he felt the static electricity while using an umbrella as he walked out of the carpark area during a drizzle.
“I was frightened of getting electrocuted and dashed back to the car and drove out from the area,” he said.
The bureau deputy chairman, Kelvin Chong Seng Foo, said Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) must take immediate measures to tackle the problem.
On June 27, the StarMetro reported that several motorists and even Chong felt “electrical jolts” while at the carpark.
Chong had said he heard crackling sounds from the aluminium frame of his umbrella before feeling his right hand weaken by an electrical jolt. He then threw his umbrella away.
The following day a TNB spokesman said their engineers had conducted an initial site assessment at the carpark found no electrical abnormalities in and around the area.
“The high voltage transmission cables is 16m from the ground and satisfies the requirements under the Electricity Supply Act that stipulates a seven-metre electrical clearance,” he added.
Yesterday, Chong urged TNB to put up a safety harness with angle bars erected below the transmission lines similar to what has been put up outside the Amcorp Mall and a nursery plant in SS5 Kelana Jaya.
“For the carpark outside Amcorp Mall and the SS5 nursery, TNB had stipulated that a wire netting be placed for the safety of people in case a cable snaps due to lightning,” he said.
