TRAFFIC heading towards the Penang Bridge and Bayan Baru along the Jelutong Expressway nearly came to a standstill, no thanks to nosy motorists who slowed down to observe a fatal accident.
The traffic jam on Thursday night started building up at 9pm following the accident involving a motorcycle and a car.
The massive jam which las-ted several hours stretched more than 3km all the way to Weld Quay.
Penang traffic police operations chief Deputy Supt K. Wari advised motorists not to slow down the traffic flow in order to satisfy their curio-sity.
“We have found that when- ever there is an accident, many motorists would slow down to take a look.
“This has caused traffic congestions and sometimes even accidents,” he said when contacted yesterday.
Motorcyclist Rahizal Guna-segaran Abdullah, 53, died on the spot after his vehicle collided head-on with a Bayan Baru-bound motorist in front of Tesco Hypermarket in Gelugor.
The Penang Municipal Council employee was said to have been riding against the traffic flow before the incident took place.
The car driver escaped with only light injuries.
