Parking problem in Seremban has reached critical level

IT IS common to see motorists double parking their vehicles in the commercial areas of Seremban town and this could be blamed on the lack of parking bays.

Although the authorities have created parking bays at all available backlanes and sidelanes, a long-term solution would be to create a multi-level parking facility.

Another option is to tear down abandoned pre-war buildings to create extra parking space.

Parking was not a problem about 10 years ago but it is now and the authorities do not seem to be solving this growing problem.

Creating parking bays at sidelanes and backlanes should only be a temporary solution because it is inconvenient for most drivers and senior citizens to park their vehicles in the narrow roads with drains on both sides.

These lanes are so narrow that only small vehicles can take up the slots.

One motorist complained that his Proton Waja was scratched because the other car was trying to park in a tight space.

Lim Siew Kee, 67, said he had given up shopping at the town due to lack of parking bays.

“Even before business hours, all parking in front of the shops are taken up by outlet owners or their employees,’’ said Lim.

Social worker K. Arutchelvan, 45, said the local authorities should examine ways to ease traffic congestion in commercial areas by providing more parking bays without disrupting traffic in these areas.

A bank employee, who only wanted to be known as Leong, said he had seen many drivers going round the area several times to find a parking spot.

He said the parking strategy in the commercial area was not right and although the police patrol unit was doing a good job by asking motorists who double-parked to remove their vehicles, it was a daily headache for the cops.

Early this year, Seremban Municipal Council (MPS) president Datuk Abdul Halim Abd Latiff had asked landowners in town who had vacant plots to convert their sites into parking areas if they did not have immediate plans to develop the property as traffic congestion had reached a critical level.
