KUALA LUMPUR: Stage bus companies in the Klang Valley will operate under a single entity, if a proposal being prepared for the government is adopted.
The proposal consolidates all stage bus operations in the Klang Valley.
Stage bus operators may see themselves operating under Sya-rikat Prasarana Negara Bhd's Rangkaian Pengangkutan Integrasi Deras Sdn Bhd (RapidKL).
They may be asked to take up shares in RapidKL, which is owned by Prasarana.
Under the proposal, these companies may operate buses under the RapidKL brand, sources told the New Straits Times.
RapidKL operates 1,200 buses on 670 routes in the Klang Valley.
The Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board's website said there were 12 stage bus companies in the Klang Valley, including RapidKL, City Liner, Len Seng, Selangor Omnibus and Metrobus Nationwide.
RapidKL is the operator of the two light rail transit lines, the largest stage bus (regular or trunk bus route) and feeder bus services here, and the monorail.
Prasarana operates and owns all the assets of the rail and bus services.
It has a subsidiary called Rapid Penang, which operates the bus services there.
The sources said bus companies in Seoul, South Korea, were assigned routes.
"In the past 15 to 20 years, bus operators were given licences not based on supply and demand.
"Those applying for licences were looking only at lucrative routes, which is why Ampang, Subang Jaya, Pudu-Cheras and the Federal Highway have so many services."
Under the proposal, these companies will be assigned routes to operate and they will operate under a key performance indicator.
They will be rewarded if they meet targets.
"In this case, instead of competing with each other, the arrangement will make them work to improve their routes."
Early this month, the Pan Malaysia Bus Operators Association proposed that the government buy over bus companies that were in the red. Association president Datuk Mohamad Ashfar Ali said the government should buy the companies, the bus routes and the workers.
