IPOH: Road users are advised to be careful on the roads and highways this festive season to avoid becoming another statistic.

Perak Road Safety Council chairman Datuk Ho Cheng Wang said road fatalities were still high despite the numerous road safety campaigns organised by the government.

Citing statistics, Ho said there had been 2,072 deaths on the road nationwide since the launch of Ops Sikap five years ago.

“Please be careful while on the road this festive season or you will end up as another statistic,” he said during the launch of the state-level road safety campaign at Ipoh Selatan toll plaza here.

Ho, who is also state Infrastructure and Public Utilities Committee chairman, added that for every motorist who died on the road, the Government lost RM1.2mil.

“The Government loses about RM8.3bil from road fatalities every year,” he said, adding that the Government planned to instil road safety knowledge among the young by introducing the subject in schools near year.

On another matter, Ho said the traffic police would be stationed at three toll plazas – Bidor, Ipoh Selatan and Jelapang to keep an eye on motorists.

“The Emergency Response Team comprising the Road Transport Department, the Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Unit, St John Ambulance and Red Crescent Society will also be stationed at toll plazas, federal and state roads in case of any eventualities,” he said.

A total of 100 St John Ambulance members will be stationed along the Perak stretch of the North-South Expressway from Oct 20 to 22, 25 and from 28 to 30.

The members, in teams of four ambulances, will be on 24-hour standby. Those who need emergency assistance can contact the St John Ambulance hotline at 05-254 5946.
