PLUS to screen off minor accident spots

PETALING JAYA: Minor accidents on highways will be covered by screens to prevent congestion caused by curious motorists slowing down to have a look.

Works Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor said PLUS Expressways, the concessionaire for the North-South Expressway, ELITE Highway, North Klang Valley Expressway and the Second Link, would adopt this measure to reduce traffic congestion caused by accidents.

“Sometimes it is just a small knock on the bumper, but it causes a massive jam. Other motorists slow down to look at the accidents.

“Some want to take down the number to buy 4D (lottery), others are busybodies who want to check out the condition of the driver or the severity of the crash,” he said.

With the screens, Shaziman said other motorists would be deterred from slowing down as they would not be able to see the vehicles involved in collisions.

“PLUS will do this for accidents that do not need the police (to be on site), meaning minor accidents. They will move the cars involved to the side and cover them up to allow traffic to continue flowing smoothly,” he said.

When pointed out that a scene was usually caused by tow-truck operators who congregate around the accident site, Shaziman advised those involved in accidents to wait for the PLUS patrol team.

“PLUS says it takes 20 minutes for its people to arrive. They are equipped with a GPS (Global Positioning System) and can get there very fast,” he said.

Shaziman was speaking to reporters after visiting the PLUS traffic monitoring centre, which cost RM54mil, in Subang Jaya.

The centre monitors almost 1,000km of highways under PLUS’ management, with more than 1,600 close circuit television (CCTV) cameras placed at strategic locations.
