KUALA LUMPUR: The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) will conduct a public inquiry into the allegation that law enforcement personnel used excessive force in Bandar Mahkota Cheras on July 23 and 24.

Its commissioner, Datin Paduka Zaitoon Datuk Othman, said the inquiry among others was to find out whether any personnel, in performing his duty to maintain law and order, had used excessive force during the May 27 incident.

It would also look into whether there was any violation of human rights of any person or persons and who was responsible for such violation, she said in a statement released here.

On the night of May 27, some residents of Bandar Mahkota Cheras were reported to have been beaten up by a group of men during a protest in which the residents removed a barricade on an access road into their housing area.

After the incident, Suhakam received a complaint that 21-year-old Chang Jiun Haur was beaten up by several Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel after three men and a woman were said to have knocked into them.
