KUALA LUMPUR: A Mat Rempit gang, believed to be responsible for 70 robberies in the Klang Valley, has been busted by police.
Eight gang members, aged between 18 and 30, have been picked up so far in various operations since January. They include the 25-year-old gang leader.
A 17-year-old girl, believed to be his lover, was also arrested. It is believed that she tagged along with the gang whenever they committed robberies.
Cheras police chief Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Amir Mohd Hashim said the gang, known as "Awang Rempit", had been behind at least 20 armed robberies since January, and was possibly connected to 50 more as well.
"We are investigating their connection to those 50 robberies," he said, adding that there were still some members at large, and that police were looking for at least three of them.
He said the gang went in a group of 10 to 15 riders and the target was usually women.
"Once they identify their targets, they will block the car and attack the victim with a parang or any other sharp object before escaping with whatever valuables they can grab."
