KLANG: Thousands of motorists were caught in a massive traffic jam here after an underground water pipe burst due to piling works to upgrade the Federal Highway near the Bulatan 100.
The pipe burst after one of the pilings struck it at about 10am, causing water to gush out and flood part of the road leading to Kuala Lumpur.
Some other major roads around this royal town were also jammed up as motorists entering and leaving town tried to avoid the congested Federal Highway.
Selangor Works Department senior assistant director Mazlan Mohamad, when contacted, said the water distribution company Syabas rushed workers to the scene.
He said the repair works took about eight hours to complete.
Mazlan also apologised to the public for the inconvenience caused.
A motorist identified only as Robert said it took him more than an hour to travel from the Kota Bridge to Jalan Meru, which is only about a kilometre away.
“The water level in front of the Public Bank in Persiaran Sultan Ibrahim was quite high and caused massive traffic congestion when vehicles had to crawl the stretch.
“It worsened the traffic condition in Klang town that was already congested due to the construction works at the Federal Highway,” he added.
Part of the Federal Highway in Klang town has been closed to traffic for one-and-a-half-years for upgrading works.
The closure of the 600m stretch from Persiaran Sultan Ibrahim to the Kota Bridge started on May 15 and will go on until December 2009.http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?fi ... sec=nation
