BUTTERWORTH: Effective Aug 15, heavy vehicles will be banned from using the Penang Bridge during peak hours between 6.30am and 8.30am as well as between 5pm and 7pm.
Penang Bridge Sdn Bhd (PBSB) deputy general manager Abd Rahman Hassan said the move was aimed at reducing traffic congestion on the bridge.
He said heavy vehicles comprised Class 4 lorries with two axels as well as those with five or six wheels, besides Class 5 and Class 6 lorries, trailers and trucks with three axels and four axels respectively.
The ban also covered Class 7 vehicles with five axels and more.
"Works Minister Datuk Mohd Zin Mohamad has, however, allowed an exemption for vehicles that urgently need to transport their goods during peak hours.
"They will have to write to the Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA)'s northern region office to apply for the exemption," Ab Rahman said in a statement Thursday.
Abd Rahman also reminded slow moving vehicles such as motorcycles with attached sidecars, road rollers, forklifts, excavators, road paving machines, tractors, bulldozers and graders that they were also banned from using the bridge from 6am to midnight.
"We would like to also remind motorists to keep their distance between vehicles and observe all directional signs, including those on the Variable Messaging System (VMS)," he said.
